Funding for Canadian-owned Book Publishers

Employees of Canadian-owned and controlled book publishers may be eligible to have tuition, travel, and accommodation costs incurred in attending the Summer Publishing Workshops partially funded by the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program is administered by the Association of Canadian Publishers.

The Garner Book Publishing Award
Applicants to the Book Publishing Immersion Workshop may qualify for funding from The Garner Book Publishing Award that recognizes the foundational commitment of one professional entering the book publishing industry in Canada. Eligible participants will have a demonstrated commitment to the Canadian book publishing industry as well as financial need. This bursary of $2295 will cover the cost of tuition for the Book Publishing Immersion Workshop and will be awarded yearly to one applicant who, without financial support, could not attend this workshop and who intends to become active in the Canadian book publishing community. Deadline for applications is June 5, has been extended until June 22, 2009 and the successful applicants will be notified by June 29, 2009.

The Simon & Schuster Marketing and Sales Internship Award
Simon & Schuster Canada is offering a three-month internship (including a one-week placement at the head office in New York) and $5000 to a graduate of the Book Publishing Immersion Workshop. The participant must successfully complete the workshop and demonstrate an aptitude in the sales and marketing of books. Participants will be asked to apply and SFU faculty will forward a list of potential candidates to Simon & Schuster Canada.

The Don and Barbara Atkins Publishing Award
Individuals who have limited financial resources are encouraged to apply for partial funding under the Don and Barbara Atkins Publishing Award. This award cannot be combined with funding through the Association of Canadian Publishers, BC Association of Magazine Publishers, or other outside sources and is designed for those who otherwise would not be able to attend an identified workshop. Bursary Funding for Magazine-related Workshops
The BC Association of Magazine Publishers (BCAMP) offers a limited number of bursaries to members and their staff to attend recognized magazine workshops. The bursaries cover 75% of registration fees. The application deadline is June 1, 2009. These funds are made available through the contribution of the Canada Magazine Fund (Department of Canadian Heritage).

Federal, Provincial, and State Funding
Participants are encouraged to contact their federal, provincial, or state governments to inquire about training assistance programs that may apply to the SFU Summer Publishing Workshops. Past participants who qualified have received funding through the Department of Human Resources and Social Development, formerly known as Human Resources Development Canada, Washington State Career Training Programs, and several provincial government programs across Canada. Any documentation required to support applications will be supplied by the SFU Summer Publishing Workshops.
